Harbour House: Flushing's Coastal Gem for Food Lovers

Flushing, a tucked-away village on Cornwall’s coastline, has always exuded quiet charm. Now, it has Harbour House, a pub that feels like the heart of this tranquil spot, a place where the food matches the beauty of the surroundings. Owners Tamara Costin and William Speed have created something special here, blending history and contemporary elegance in a way that feels effortless. From Penryn made upcycled lighting to a bar crafted by a traditional boatbuilder, every detail whispers of craftsmanship and care.

From the moment I walked in, there was a sense of ease. Manager Will greeted me like an old friend and my server, Lois, brought genuine warmth to the table. In the kitchen, chef Charlotte worked her magic, presenting dishes that spoke of Cornwall’s natural bounty with understated brilliance.

I began with burrata, paired with figs and honey, creamy, sweet, and just indulgent enough. Across the table, a prawn and langoustine cocktail captured the freshness of the sea with every bite.

For mains, a generous 12oz rump steak arrived with crisp fries and a peppercorn and shallot butter, comfort food elevated to perfection. My Pollock with masala sauce, paired with charred gem lettuce and confit garlic new potatoes, was a bold yet balanced plate, its spices a gentle contrast to the coastal setting.

Dessert was pure fun: soft-serve ice cream swirled with lemon curd and meringue, tasting like summer on a spoon. Paired with a glass of Organic Sauvignon Blanc and a refreshing non-alcoholic Negroni, it was the kind of meal that feels both luxurious and unpretentious.

Harbour House is more than a pub, it’s a destination. Already on the radar of Michelin inspectors, its menu is thoughtful and creative without being fussy. The drinks list, featuring Cornish beers, ciders and a curated wine selection from Wanderlust, invites you to linger a little longer, perhaps by the fire as the evening light fades.

As I stepped outside into the golden glow of late afternoon, I knew this was the kind of place you’d happily make a detour for. Harbour House doesn’t just offer great food, it offers a sense of place, where the essence of Cornwall is captured in every detail.
